This Blog has Done its Work

It's really been a couple of years since I last touched this blog with any regularity. It's coming to the point where it will soon be taken down or migrated into a fuller, more useful website that doesn't require daily feeding to make it fresh.

At first, around 2004, I was simply exploring "blogging." No aesthetic efforts were applied at all -- which was the aesthetic I was shooting for.

I wanted a no-frills, unpretentious blog and wanted it very low profile. A friend from NPR suggested the program Moveable Type, which, as it turned out, was like driving a tack with a sledge hammer. In retrospect, the program was ill-advised for a variety of reasons, but largely because the user manual reads like a PhD dissertation for nuclear physicists.

Nevertheless, the blog worked just fine as a communication tool with those interested in what I was actively reporting on from 2003 until a few years ago: contractors on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. It made complete sense for that, but that intent has outlived its usefulness. I've moved on, but the blog is still hanging around like an old dusty book with crumbling dog-eared pages. (Sort of like the contractor investigations at DOJ that have been under seal for years.)

Google my name and this blog comes up. That's not the way it was intended to be. For years, this blog didn't show up at all except under a blog search. So, unfortunately, the low-key dimension is no longer and the bland design not something I want associated with my more visible work.

So in the coming month or so, I will decide on the fate of this humble effort. In the meantime, thanks to all who have participated in this experiment. It was fun and rewarding.
